The 21st of March coincides with the anniversary of the Battle of Dignity, as the Jordanian and Palestinian people celebrate this anniversary every year; Where the fighting began in the Battle of Karameh on March 21, 1968, and lasted for more than 16 hours, when the Israeli occupation forces tried to impose their control on the eastern bank of the Jordan River, but the Jordanian army, Palestinian resistance fighters, and the people of the village of Karama confronted the Israeli army, and forced it to withdraw The final of the battle.


Battle events


The Israeli forces prepared for the war by launching a number of attacks, using that air and artillery bombardment. These attacks were concentrated along the Jordanian front, and lasted for several weeks before the start of the battle. In addition, Israel prepared the war from various aspects, including the political and psychological side, On the eleventh of March of 1968 AD, Israel launched its attack on the eastern bank of the Jordan River, and this attack extended from the northern side of (Prince Muhammad Bridge) to the south of the Dead Sea, and Israel was aiming from this attack to eliminate the Palestinian resistance in Karama camp.

The Jordanian town of Karama and its environs witnessed the events of this battle. As the Israeli forces launched an attack on the Jordanian army forces and the Palestinian fedayeen, and this attack was considered the first Israeli attack on Arab lands after the 1967 war, and despite the Israeli army’s success in destroying the fedayeen base in Karama. However, they suffered heavy losses in this battle.

The results of the battle of Dignity were as follows:

  • The Palestinian resistance succeeded in defeating the Israeli army; Where they achieved a great victory over them.
  • Enhancing the status of the Palestine Liberation Organization, the enrollment of thousands of Palestinian youth to the organization, and the beginning of paramilitary training for them.
  • The Arabs were able to regain a part of the dignity they lost in June 1967 AD. The battle of Dignity brought back fear and panic in the Israeli people.
  • Increasing international support for the resistance, and this was evident in the demonstrations supporting the Arabs in Norway and Sweden.
